RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday called for a Grand Alliance at the national level to defeat the BJP and said there was a need for opposition leaders to shed their ego. A Grand Alliance is the demand of time, it is the demand of the people. Keep your ego away, Yadav said as the BJP lost the Lok Sabha seats of Phulpur and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and Araria in Bihar. He said the Samajwadi Party and the BSP should fight the 2019 Lok Sabha polls together and urged the Congress to join them. There is a need to teach a lesson to those who have destroyed the country, Yadav said. The Bahujan Samaj Party supported the Samajwadi Party in both Phulpur and Gorakhpur to avoid a split in opposition vote. The Rashtriya Janata Dal had the backing of the Congress in Bihar. He said the RJDs victory in Araria was not a victory of M-Y (Muslim Yadav) combination, but a victory of everyone – from A to Z. The former Deputy Chief Minister, who led the RJD campaign as his father and RJD chief Lalu Prasad is in jail, said his partys social support base was intact. BJP…

PNB fraud: RBI initiates special audit of PSBs with focus on trade finance
Rattled by spate of banking frauds, RBI has initiated special audit of state-owned lenders with focus on trade financing activities, especially relating to issuance of letters of undertakings (LoUs) by them, banking sources said. In addition, the RBI has asked all banks for details of the LoUs they had written, including the amounts outstanding, and whether the banks had pre-approved credit limits or kept enough cash on margin before issuing the guarantees. Most of the big banking frauds which were unearthed in the recent past, including the one perpetuated by diamantaire Nirav Modi and his associates, pertain to trade finance. Also, many of the willful default cases have their roots in trade finance, the sources told PTI. In view of the recent Rs 12,646-crore PNB scam, done through fraudulent issuance of LoUs by connivance of the banks staff, it was pertinent for the regulator RBI to examine the issue of trade finance which also included issuance of letter of credit (LC) and LoUs, sources said. Soon after Nirav Modi case came to light, the CBI registered a case against a Delhi-based diamond jewellery exporter Dwarka Das Seth International for an alleged bank loan fraud to the tune of Rs 389.85…

He left Meerut at 8 p.m. on Sunday. As he, along with his friends Deepak and Krishna, reached Sahibabad, they stopped their car at an eatery near the railway station. The moment the car halted, the robbers whipped out a pistol, grabbed the entire stock of gold and escaped. We hope to work out the case soon, Superintendent of Police Akash Tomar said. But furious jewellers said theft of gold had become a recurring phenomenon in Ghaziabad, a sprawling district which borders Delhi. NDA minus TDP: Embarrassment for BJP but Modi government still strong; here’s how BJP and NDA stack up in Lok Sabha
Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government is set to witness its first no-confidence motion, likely to be brought in the Parliament by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). Another jolt it has suffered is the exit of its second largest ally, TDP, which has 16 MPs in the house. However, Bharatiya Janata Party-led government looks safe at the moment as far as numbers are concerned and the vote may prove to be just an embarrassment for the government. BJP, which leads NDA, has the numbers to save the government on its own. The saffron party currently has 274 MPs (including Speaker Sumitra Mahajan) and forms around 51 per cent of the total lawmakers in the house. Following BJP in NDA is Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena with 18 MPs. Then comes Ram Vilas Paswans Lok Jan Shakti party with 6 members. LJP is followed by BJPs alliance partner in Punjab, Shiromani Akali Dali, which has 4 members in the House. After SAD, BJPs ally from Bihar, Upendra Kushwaha-led RLSP and Nitish Kumar-led JDU have 3 and 2 MPs, respectively. In Uttar Pradesh, BJPs only alliance partner Apna Dal has 2 seats. Apart from these main parties, the NDA also has the support…

Narendra Modi may lose Varanasi in 2019? Here’s what numbers say about Rahul Gandhi’s claim
Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may lose his Varanasi seat in 2019 General elections. But there is a condition. Gandhi said Modi will lose if all opposition parties fight unitedly against the prime minister. The Congress president has not only challenged Modi to stand against united SP, BSP, and Congress but also said the BJP will win just two seats if the three parties come together. At present, it is too early to predict what will happen in Varanasi in 2019. Two factors need to be looked into to analyze Rahul Gandhis predictions. First, the opposition SP, BSP, and Congress are buoyed by the result of recently-held Lok Sabha by-elections in Phulpur and Gorakhpur. The SP-BSP combine had managed to shock the BJP in both seats. And both parties have announced they will contest together in 2019. The Congress, which failed to save deposits in the by-elections, has not yet declared if it will fight in a three-party alliance including SP and BSP. Going by Gandhis word, Congress would likely tie up with the two regional parties or may back them by not fielding its own candidates. Second, even if all opposition parties…

Togadia, who returned here last night, met his supporters and top VHP functionaries in Gujarat today to finalise his plans for the fast at the state VHP headquarters. I got disenchanted with this government in the last four years. The disenchantment, in fact, had started slowly after the 2002 events in Gujarat, he said, speaking to reporters later. Mamata Banerjees Trinamool Congress is very close to sweeping the upcoming three-tier West Bengal Panchayat Election on May 14. The party has already grabbed 34 per cent of seats without any contest. However, data show that despite TMCs staggering performance, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has risen to become the principal opposition party. In terms of the number of candidates fielded by the saffron party, the BJP is a force to reckon with in rural areas of four districts. The BJP has managed to keep candidates till the end of nomination withdrawal process. Out of 48, 650 gram panchayat seats, BJP has fielded 23, 445 candidates. While Left Front and Congress are at third and fourth positions with 16,818 and 5,925 nominations. Me, my sister have ‘completely forgiven’ father’s killers, says Congress chief Rahul Gandhi
Congress President Rahul Gandhi today said that he and his sister Priyanka Gandhi have completely forgiven his father Rajiv Gandhis killers. During his interaction with IIM alumni in Singapore, Gandhi, when asked if he and his sister Priyanka had forgiven his fathers killers, said: We were very upset and hurt and for many years we were quite angry. But, somehow, completely.in fact, completely (forgiven). There is a history that when one realises that when these events take place, its collision of ideas, forces, confusion. Thats where you get caught. I remember when I saw Mr Prabhakaran on TV lying dead, I got two feelings – one was why they are humiliating this man in this way. And second was I felt really bad for him and for his kids and I did that because I understood deeply what it meant to be on the other side of that thing. So to me when I see violence regardless of who it is, I know that there is a human being behind that, there is a family behind that, a kid crying behind that. I have been through a lot of pain to get this and it is something I consider very…

Narendra Modi’s simultaneous elections dream can become reality in 2019 if these happen
Prime Minister Narendra Modis dream to hold simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, legislative assemblies and other bodies can become a reality on two conditions. According to the Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat, these conditions are: First, a necessary amendment to the Constitution; Second, availability of the sufficient number of electronic voting machines and necessary logistics. Rawat also says that other necessary logistics need to be also put in place before introducing the simultaneous election system. The government had sought the Election Commissions (EC) opinion in 2015 on holding the elections to the Lok Sabha, legislative assemblies, and other bodies together. We had sent a detailed reply to the government, telling them that this new system would require amendments in the relevant paragraphs of the Constitution and certain sections of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Representation of the People Act, 1951, PTI quoted the CEC as saying at the Foundation Day function of Indore Press club. Rawat didnt share his opinion on the merits and demerits of the simultaneous election system, saying it is for the political parties, lawmakers and citizens to make a decision. PM Modi has been batting for the simultaneous election system for…

Karnataka election 2018: SP-BSP bonhomie put to test as Akhilesh and Mayawati take on each other
Star campaigners are no new phenomenon in the scheme of elections. Prominent parties ensure that their popular leaders are best used in elections across states in India. However, things are bound to stand out when top leaders from one state battle it out in the other. The case in point here is Karnataka Assembly elections 2018 and at the centre of the bitter campaign is Uttar Pradesh. The influence of Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming Karnataka assembly poll has special significance in Karnataka elections. As unassuming as it may seem, the top political leaders and three Chief Ministers (one incumbent and two former) of the state will swoop down on the campaign trail in the southern state. The leaders include Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati. The trio will hold several rallies across the state. After the defeat in the recently held Gorakhpur and Phoolpur bypolls, Adityanath continues his position as being the partys star campaigner. When a Vistara passenger took to Twitter alleging that he spotted cockroach in food
A passenger onboard a Vistara flight today complained of spotting a cockroach in his food, with the airline rejecting such claims. The airline in its reply to the passenger said the insect was not on or from the meal and we are fumigating the aircraft regularly. In a series of tweets, the airline, however, said, despite regular fumigation, insects still find a way in and we apologise for the inconvenience caused. As the aircraft doors are opened regularly on ground, insects can sometimes still find a way in despite our best efforts of fumigating the aircraft. The incident comes a few days after the government ordered a probe last month after a doctor was allegedly manhandled and offloaded from an IndiGo flight at Lucknow airport when he complained of mosquitoes onboard.

Mining issue: Who is Nitin Gadkari to overrule Goa government, asks Shiv Sena
The Shiv Sena today criticised Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for `overruling the state governments decision to file a review petition against the Supreme Courts decision on mining. The mining activity in Goa has come to a standstill after the apex court quashed second renewal of 88 mining leases. Gadkari visited the state earlier this month to work out a solution to the crisis. The State Cabinet Advisory Committee had decided to file a review petition in the mining matter. But suddenly Gadkari arrived and announced that a legal opinion would be taken before filing the petition, Senas Goa spokesperson Rakhi Prabhudesai Naik said in a statement here. What authority Gadkari had to overrule the decision taken by the Cabinet Advisory Committee appointed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar (who is undergoing treatment in the US), she asked. Gadkari has no right to act like a de-facto chief minister of Goa and act against the Cabinet Advisory Committee, Naik added. The BJP Gadkaris visit to the state and the drama of holding meetings with industry stakeholders, ruling coalition partners and BJP leaders was merely an eyewash to avoid a backlash from the people dependent on mining, the Sena leader alleged. Gadkari, after…
Yogi government passes stringent crime control bill on the lines of MCOCA; here are details
The Uttar Pradesh Assembly today passed a stringent bill to curb organsied crime and deal strictly with those trying to foment terror, even as the Opposition members staged a walkout alleging that it was a draconian legislation. The Uttar Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Bill (UPCOCB) had to be re-introduced in the assembly today as it could not be passed in the Legislative Council, where the ruling BJP is in minority, after being cleared by the Lower House earlier this month. The proposed legislation on the lines of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) seeks to curb organsied crime and deal strictly with those trying to foment terror or dislodge the government forcibly or through violent means. The UPCOC Bill, 2017, also seeks to act sternly against those using explosives or firearms or any other violent means or damaging life and property or involved in anti-national or destructive activities. Piloting the bill for discussion, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath justified the measure to put a halt to crime in a vast state like Uttar Pradesh. In course of the discussion, Leader of the Opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary voiced concern that the measure could be misused by a ruling dispensation against…
Who can be unchallenged leader in non-BJP camp at present? Sonia Gandhi can be possible candidate
An indication as to how difficult it is going to be for the opposition at the national level to get its act together was available after K. Chandrashekar Rao met Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata to lay the foundation for a federal front. However, even before the proposed alliance could get off the ground, the differences about its framework were visible. While the Telangana Chief Minister wanted it to be a non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), non-Congress group, his West Bengal counterpart kept her options open about including the Congress. A feature of these alliances is that each of their constituents is guided by the ground realities in their own states which may be at variance with the political condition in some other state. For instance, the Congress may be a more formidable adversary for Chandrashekhar Rao in his state, but it isnt so for Mamata Banerjee. So, while the Telangana Chief Minister wants to keep the 133-year-old Grand Old Party at arms length, Mamata Banerjee, a former Congress person, is more accommodative. Similar conflicting perceptions are known even within one party such as the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) where the Kerala comrades are against any proximity to the Congress, obviously…
