The BJP leader, who has been vocally opposing demonetisation but continues to be a part of the party, said that he felt Modi was told demonetisation would fill government coffers. My own feeling is that someone told the Prime Minister that if he goes for demonetisation, Rs 3-4 lakh crore will come. It will be a bonanza for the government. that unfortunately did not happen, he said. Sinha questioned why the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did not issue the final figures on the cash that has been collected post November 8, 2016 demonetisation…

Unfazed by losses in recent bypolls, BJP confident of win in Maharashtra
Undeterred by setbacks in the recent byelections in some states, the BJP is confident of retaining the Bhandara-Gondia and Palghar Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, where the bypolls are due. However, the Congress feels the recent bypoll results were an indication of the changing political scenario. The byelection in Bhandara-Gondia is due as its sitting BJP MP, Nana Patole, resigned from the seat late last year and joined the Congress. The bypoll in Palghar is necessitated due to the death of its sitting BJP MP Chintaman Wanga in January this year. Also, following the death of senior Congress leader Patangrao Kadam, there is a vacancy in his Palus-Kadegaon Assembly seat in Sangli district. The dates of these bypolls are yet to be announced. Notably, in a setback to the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the party recently lost the bypolls to all three Lok Sabha seats it contested, including its bastion Gorakhpur, and Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh, besides Araria in Bihar. Last month, the Congress thumped the ruling BJP in Rajasthan, clinching the two Lok Sabha and one state Assembly seats in the bypolls. It also retained two Assembly seats in by-elections in MP, though with reduced…
JNU professors demand separate FIRs in all complaints against professor Atul Johri
Accusing the police of disregarding procedures, 54 JNU professors today demanded registration of separate FIRs in all eight complaints of sexual harassment filed against professor Atul Johri. They petitioned Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Milind Dumberes office two days after the Delhi Police registered an FIR against professor Johri following allegations of sexual harassment by a group of women students. The teachers said eight complaints were filed by as many women students, however, the Delhi Police chose to register only one FIR based on only one of the complaints. Even though you have received 8 complaints, each of which reports incidents that are distinct and separated by space and time, you have chosen to register only one FIR under only one of the names. We are shocked to learn this as the law requires that a separate FIR is registered for each complaint, the petition said. Such serious sexual offences are being treated in breach of law and the Supreme Court judgments on the matter, the professors said. They also demanded separate statements of all the complainants be recorded today itself This disregard for even basic procedure suggests to us that the Delhi Police has no intention of seriously proceeding…

UP bypoll verdict can spell trouble for Congress, for regional outfits may flex muscles
The results of bypolls in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar do not bode well for the Congress as the strengthening of regional outfits may weaken the grand old partys chances of leading a joint opposition front for the 2019 general elections. Political observers feel that unless the Congress reclaims some states from the BJP and retains Karnataka in Assembly elections slated to be held later this year, its chances of leading such an alliance may weaken further. The Congress, however, feels that the victory of the SP-BSP combine in Uttar Pradesh is an aberration and it is the only party with a pan-India presence capable of cobbling together and leading a coalition to defeat the BJP.
