Makkal Neethi Mayyam president Kamal Haasan today accused the Tamil Nadu government of being subservient to the Centre rather than upholding the states rights on the Cauvery issue. The day-long fast observed by the AIADMK yesterday urging the Centre to immediately constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) was farcical, Haasan told reporters here. Later, in a statement, he alleged that the state government was being subservient to the Centre. While it was the Centres responsibility to constitute the CMB, the state government cannot hallucinate that it has fulfilled its duty towards the people who elected them by just filing a contempt petition after the deadline or by holding a farcical one-day hunger strike, he said in the statement. This TN government is functioning like a subservient government to the Centre rather than upholding the states rights, which is the essence of Indias federalism, he said. Haasan told the reporters that in 2016, when the Supreme Court wanted the Centre to constitute the CMB, the government came up with lame excuses and technicalities to delay it. The same act is being replayed, he said. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his party men observed a day-long fast in Chennai yesterday,…

After TDP’s decision to quit NDA, another ally holds grudge against ‘big brother’ BJP; here’s why
After the shock defeats in Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls, all doesnt seem so well for the BJP, especially with its allies. The new trouble for the saffron party is likely to come from Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), which has just four MLAs but are crucial for getting the 9th BJP nominee for Rajya Sabha polls elected to the Upper House. SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar is apparently not happy with the treatment meted out to his party by the BJP. On Monday, Rajbhar told reporters that he will boycott voting in the Rajya Sabha elections if he doesnt get a chance to speak to BJP chief Amit Shah. The fact that he has come out in the open to voice his concerns against the BJP doesnt augur well for the saffron party. Necently, Andhra Pradesh-based Telugu Desham Party of Chandrababu Naidu had quit the BJP-led NDA at the Centre and also broken ties with the saffron party. With its over 300 MLAs, BJP is certain about sending eight nominees to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh and still have 28 surplus votes. The BJP wants to take help of allies and dissidents from the opposition to get its ninth…

Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll: Fresh test of opposition unity in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh
The new found opposition unity in Uttar Pradesh will be on test once again in the coming Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) appearing keen on throwing its hat in the ring. Led by former union minister Ajit Singh, the RLD which has considerable influence in western UP, believes that both the caste and communal equations there are in its favour. The decision on which party will be given the ticket is for the senior leaders of opposition parties to decide.we want that the united opposition which had taken shape in the recent Lok Sabha by-elections (in Gorakhpur and Phulpur) should be expanded to defeat the BJP, RLD national spokesman Anil Dubey told PTI today. Propose, oppose but come together to resolve issues: Venkaiah Naidu to MPs on Parliament logjam
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today said in a parliamentary democracy, lawmakers can propose and oppose a measure but at the end of it, all should come together to resolve the issue. The remarks by Naidu, who is also the chairman of the , came a fortnight after the second half of the Budget Session of Parliament was a virtual washout. There may be some delay (in Parliament). It happens some time. You know we are a democracy. When one House (Lok Sabha) passes (a measure), the other House (Rajya Sabha) waits for some time. Because they are more mature people, Naidu said, apparently referring to the logjam in Parliament. He said in a democracy people can debate, discuss and decide. I tell those people also who want to stop (a measure from being put forth by the government in Parliament) for a while, that there is nothing wrong in stopping it for a while. It can be a speed breaker where you can stop and then move on. But it should not be a total breaker because in a parliamentary democratic system, one can propose and the other can oppose (but they) should dispose of (the measure) at the end of…
China’s OBOR obsession: Will India join Belt and Road initiative? Issue may be on agenda during Modi-Xi meet
Narendra Modi-Xi Jinping summit: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modis ice-breaking visit to China for an informal meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing is keen on taking India on board its ambitious Belt and Road initiative (also referred to as One Belt, One Road – OBOR). China has, however, failed to get Indias support for the initiative. In the recently concluded bilateral foreign ministers meeting ahead of Modi-Xi Summit, Beijing failed to win Indias support for the landmark Chinese project. Indias main objection to OBOR is that one of the key Belt and Road projects, the $57 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) region, which is claimed by New Delhi. During the Modi-Xi summit also, Chinas efforts to woo India to take the latter onboard OBOR is likely to be the key feature. News agency Reuters said on Tuesday, Whether or not China will be able to win India round to the Belt and Road will likely be a key measure of the success of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi In scores of articles since the launch of Belt and Road project, Chinese official media Global Times has reasoned why India should join the China-led initiative….

Jaitley was one of the five members who hasnt taken oath. Sources said Jaitleys present condition may be a fallout of the bariatric surgery he had undergone soon after the BJP government came to power at the Centre in 2014. He underwent the surgery to treat weight gain that he suffered because of a long-standing diabetic condition. That surgery was first performed at Max Hospital, but he then had to be shifted to AIIMS because of complications. Sources said doctors from AIIMS are attending to Jaitley at his residence now. A final call is…

Indian-American Democratic lawmakers oppose Trump admin’s plan to end work permits for H1B spouses
Top Indian-American Democratic lawmakers have vehemently opposed the Trump administrations plan to scrap an Obama-era rule allowing spouses of H-1B visa holders to work legally in the US. The Trump administration is planning to propose to end allowing spouses of H1-B visa holders to work legally in the US, a move that could have a devastating impact on tens of thousands of Indians. The plan to end the Obama-era rule could have an impact on more than 70,000 H-4 visas holders, who have work permits. I will say that the H-4 visas go to women who are just as qualified, sometimes more qualified, than their spouses but havent been able to work, Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said at an event at the US Capitol organised by the US India Friendship Council. I oppose the move to terminate work permits to H-4 visas, Jayapal, the first Indian-American woman elected to the House of Representatives told PTI. This is a gender issue as well, she emphasised, referring to the fact that a significantly large number of beneficiaries H-4 work permits are women. Before being elected to the Congress, Jayapal had worked to build a coalition across the country to get permits to…

Bypoll defeats no referendum on BJP policies, programmes, says UP CM Yogi Adityanath
The BJPs defeat in the recent Lok Sabha bypolls in Gorakhpur and Phulpur cannot be termed a referendum on the policies and programmes of the partys governments at the Centre or in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today said. He, however, added the BJP has learnt its lessons and exuded confidence it will perform better in future polls. I dont see the results as a referendum, he said at an event here. He said the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party (SP-BSP) combine had not made any dent in the saffron partys vote bank. The SP-BSP understanding was not an alliance but a political deal and everyone knows how these two parties have damaged the state, he said. During the campaign for the bypolls, the chief minister had launched a frontal attack on the two parties calling them snake and mole. When mediapersons today suggested it was not appropriate for him (Adityanath is also a mahant of the Gorakhnath temple) to use foul words against his rivals, the saffron-clad politician said, Whatever I have said is right, and I still stick to it. Both the SP and BSP were private limited companies, one-man show and undemocratic, as these were family-based organisations,…

Centre’s decision unfortunate, amounts to interference: Former CJIs RM Lodha, TS Thakur on KM Joseph matter
The central governments move to elevate advocate Indu Malhotra as Supreme Court judge and reject the nomination of Chief Justice of Uttarakhand KM Joseph has failed to garner a favourable response from two former Chief Justices, with questions being raised on how Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra could allow the government do this. Former Chief Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha has said by taking such steps, the government has struck at the very heart of the independence of the judiciary. By simply sitting over the file for weeks and then picking one and not the other, a whole new succession comes into play. This is interference in the judiciary, apart from, of course, rejecting names that the government doesn If the reiteration must be done, it must happen immediately. The Chief Justice cannot sit over the file either, indefinitely, as can Notably, a similar segregation was seen during Justice Lodhas tenure as Chief Justice when the BJP-led NDA government segregated one out of four recommendations of the Lodha-led collegium. Referring to the 2014 incident, Justice Lodha said: This was very wrong. I wrote to the Law Minister on June 30, immediately upon my return that it was wrong and should…
