Delhi court grants bail to Karti Chidambaram’s chartered accountant in INX Media case
A Delhi court today granted bail to Karti Chidambarams chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman, arrested in the INX Media money laundering case. The court granted the relief to the CA and asked him to furnish a bail bond of Rs two lakh and a surety of like amount. It asked Bhaskararaman to cooperate in the investigation as and when required by the ED and asked him not to leave the country without its permission. Bhaskararaman had sought bail on the ground that he was not required for custodial interrogation and no purpose would be served by keeping him in custody. The CA was sent to jail on February 26 after his custodial interrogation by the ED. 90 pct Rajya Sabha MPs are crorepatis: ADR report
Nearly 90 per cent of the Rajya Sabha MPs are crorepatis while the average of total assets Upper House parliamentarians is Rs 55 crore, says a report. The report is based on an analysis of the self-sworn affidavits of 229 out of 233 sitting Rajya Sabha MPs by the National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). Out of the 229 sitting Rajya Sabha MPs analysed, 201 (88 per cent) are crorepatis, a report by Delhi-based think-tank ADR said today, adding the average of assets per Rajya Sabha MP is Rs 55.62 crore. Mahendra Prasad of Janata Dal (United) has the highest assets worth Rs 4,078.41 crore among the Rajya Sabha MPs. Samajwadi Partys Jaya Bachchan is at second place with assets worth Rs 1,001.64 crore, followed by BJPs Ravindra Kishore Sinha with assets worth Rs 857.11 crore. Among major parties, the average asset size per parliamentarian of 64 BJP MPs is Rs 27.80 crore, while it is Rs 40.98 crore for 50 belonging to the Congress. Pune’s Yerawada jail overcrowded: NCW
Punes Yerawada Central Prison holds more than double its capacity, the National Commission for Women (NCW) said after an inspection on Thursday. According to the womens body, the jail has 282 inmates while the total capacity is 126. Of this, 164 are convicts and 118 are undertrials. There is one foreign inmate while 10 children are staying with their mothers, NCW member Alok Rawat. The inspection was carried out for assessing and looking into various aspects including overcrowding, availability of legal help, rehabilitation plans such as skill development and training, legal awareness for women inmates, proper facilities for the children of these inmates among others. The jail authorities are striving to involve NGOs in their efforts to improve the living conditions of inmates, as also to provide them skills aimed at their rehabilitation, going beyond the traditional embroidery skill training and introducing new training like repairing of home appliances, an NCW statement said. However, it also mentioned that there have been marks of improvement of basic amenities being provided to inmates like renovation of space and modernization of hygienic facilities. Will ask Centre to release funds to MCDs if you cannot: Delhi HC to AAP government
The Delhi High Court today warned that it would ask the Centre to release funds directly to the citys civic bodies if the AAP government cannot provide additional finances to the municipal corporations. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar made the observation after the corporations told the court that they have not paid wages of their cleaning staff and other employees since December last year due to lack of funds. The corporations, represented by central government standing counsel Monika Arora and advocate Mini Pushkarna, also told the court the AAP government was yet to release funds according to the recommendations of the Fourth Delhi Finance Commission (DFC). Thereafter, the bench directed the Delhi government to place before it a tabulation of the recommendations made by the DFC and the funds transferred to the corporations. The court directed the Delhi government to place the recommendations of the Fourth DFC before the Lieutenant Governor who has been asked to consider the same and give a report. A video showing a nursing assistant behaving cruelly towards an elderly patient at the government medical college here has gone viral on social media today, prompting the authorities to suspend him from service. In the video, the male nursing staff was seen verbally abusing and twisting the fingers of the senior citizen, who was admitted to the hospital with fracture on his leg. The visuals were reportedly taken by a bystander of another patient person in his mobile phone. With local news channels airing the visuals, Health Minister K K Shylaja directed the medical college superintendent to conduct an inquiry and take stringent measures if necessary. During the preliminary inquiry, the nursing assistant and the ward where the cruelty had happened, were identified, a hospital release said here. Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu today said 500 people will be recruited for fire fighting services in the state. Listing out the measures taken by the government in the fire safety sector, he said a project worth Rs 500 crore with regard to the fire services sector has been sent to the Union government. The state government is fully committed to the development as well as modernisation of fire services. It is part of this commitment that a fire directorate has been established and very soon a Fire Safety Act will also be in force for making every building compliant with the fire safety norms, Sidhu said here. From Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh, deadly dust storm leaves behind a trail of destruction: Over 100 killed so far
At least 109 people have lost their lives and over 130 were injured in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan due to a high-intensity dust storm followed by overnight thundershowers. In Uttar Pradesh, the mounted to 65 and around 40 people are severely injured. In Rajasthan, the toll mounted to 27 and over 100 people are said to have suffered injuries in the squall. Also over 160 animals have died due to calamity in different parts of the states. Uttar Pradesh government officials said that Agra district was the worst hit due to the storm. At least 36 deaths have been reported from various parts of the district. Reports of houses collapsing, electricity poles and trees being uprooted are still coming in. According to government officials, three deaths were reported in Bijnore, two in Saharanpur and one in Bareilly. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to personally monitor the relief work and provide medical aid to affected people. He has said that no laxity will be tolerated. In a strange incident, a traffic cop was caught on camera hurling his show on two bike borne men in Bengaluru. The video that has gone viral shows both the men were not wearing a helmet. ATMs in Andhra, Telangana have no cash; here is what banks are doing now for public
The cash crunch in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has compelled the banks to move cash from neighbouring states to refill the empty ATMs for customers. On one hand, Telangana has resorted to asking help from Kerala and Maharashtra, AP has been forced to ask help from Tamil Nadu and Odisha. The situation is so severe that despite efforts made by banks to replenish currency, only 60 percent of the time cash is available in ATMs. Some banks have even stopped ATM services for the past three months.
