for fees chargeable for the service on the remainder of the Minimum
Subscription Period.
10. Can I have more than one Streamyx
connection to my premise?
Yes, as long as you have extra telephone line because each
Streamyx connection requires one direct/dedicated
telephone line.
11. What are the differences between ADSL and SDSL?
ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. It allows
you to simultaneously access the net and use the phone or fax (at the
same time). SDSL stands for Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. The
difference between ADSL and SDSL is; ADSL has a different upstream and
downstream data transfer rate (upstream higher than the downstream)
whereas SDSL offers the customer a symmetric upstream and downstream
bandwidth to the customer (eg. 1.5Mbps SDSL package offers the customer
1.5Mbps downstream speed as well as 1.5Mbps upstream speed).
Technically, SDSL also does not allow voice/fax (PSTN) over the same
copper.
12. What are the differences between xDSL connection and Dial-up connection?
xDSL does not dial to public switch telephone exchange, it
connects the customer direct to the Internet. It is fixed to the
telephone number which you provided when you apply for the service. In
contrast, dial-up modem can be used at any premises to log to tmnet.
13. What are the differences between xDSL
technology and ISDN?
ISDN allows you to have many different digital features, such as
PABX and digital fax. ISDN requires you to have a special telephone line
(i.e. you have to do a new wiring) while xDSL does not (it uses the
existing copper line at your premise). ISDN is a dial-up service while
xDSL is a always-on connection. Also there are wide ranges of bandwidth
available for xDSL (ranging from 384kbps to 4Mbps) compared to ISDN
which only have limited range of bandwidth.
14. What are the differences between xDSL and Leased Line?
Leased line let users connect from point to point without sharing
the channel with other Internet users and also without restrictions to
the distance. Thus leased line offers a better security with the service
typically ranging from 64kbps to 2Mbps. Leased line is very expensive
compared to xDSL. xDSL is however easier to install at the customer
premises. xDSL is categorized as best effort service while leased line
is premier or guaranteed bandwidth service.

your existing telephone line. For Streamyx SDSL,
you need a new copper line (TM personnel will apply for you upon
application of the service).
20. Do I need additional wiring at my house /
office?
Streamyx will be installed at where the
telephone line is terminated. You need to do the additional wiring
should you want to use the service at other part of your premise than
where the phone line is terminated at your own cost.
21. Do I need to install a network card?
Yes. You need the Network Interface Card (NIC) in order for your
PC to communicate with the modem.

This contention is applied within the TM network -
with other Streamyx subscribers on the same TM telephone exchange.
What this means in the 'worst case' is that you could
be sharing a 1000 kbps connection with up to 25 other users. So if they
were all using Streamyx at the same time 'theoretically' you would only
get 40 kbps.
However, 'in reality' this scenario is very unlikely
to happen and you should usually find it to be far faster than a dial-up
connection.
Streamyx relies on individual users not making
unreasonable traffic demands on the network to provide fast access
speeds for all.
Remember if you are not getting the speed that you expect, it may not
be due to the contention ratio only but many other factors including the
capacity of the remote site you are accessing, the quality and distance
of your telephone line from the local exchange.

26. What is Peer-to-Peer (P2P)?
Peer-to-peer is a type of Internet network allowing a group of
computer users with the same networking program to connect with each
other for the purposes of directly accessing files from one another's
hard drives. P2P speed of download and upload depends on customer
network cloud. It will be faster if the seeders (person who share their
files) are in the same local cloud as the leechers (person who download
the files). Example of P2P applications that are commonly used by
Internet users are Kaza & Bittorent.
Streamyx maximum download and upload speed is not guarantee for P2P or
any international traffic connection. TM’s policy had restricted and
enforced the P2P regulations to avoid heavy congestion for Malaysia
Internet cloud. Currently P2P is consuming greater bandwidth than other
normal Internet applications (e.g. web browsing) for Malaysia’s local
internet cloud.

27. Why TM is offering unlimited
packages & at the same time limits the amount of traffic?
Unlimited means that there is no time capping for user to access
to the Internet and it does not mean that user can download/upload an
unlimited volume of data.

28. What is the different between
Kilobits & Kilobytes (bits & bytes)?
In data communications, a kilobit is a thousand bits, or 1,000
bits. It's commonly used for measuring the amount of data that is
transferred in a second between two telecommunication points. Megabit
per second is usually shortened to Mbps.
Normally lowercase "b" will be used to distinguish between bits (b) and
bytes (B). When used as a measurement of network data transfers, or
throughput, always assume the word is bits (b) first.
In Data storage, and when describing Memory size, a Kilobyte is 210,
or 1024 bytes. Because of binary computer architecture and memory
address boundaries, bytes are always some multiple or exponent of two.
In addition 1 byte (B) is also equal to 8 bits (b).
Normally many files transfer applications use Byte (B) to measure the
size of the data or files need to be transferred. Therefore during
the transmission of the files it will indicates the size of the
files or data being transferred as Kilobytes per second or KBps. This
will translate to the network data transfers, or throughput in kbps by
multiplying the data being transferred in Kilobytes per second with 8.
