HRD ministry can go ahead with the selection of faculty to IITs: Madras High Court
The Madras High Court today said the HRD Ministry can go ahead with the process of selection of faculty to IITs, but made it clear that it would be subject to the result of a writ appeal filed before it in the above connection. The appeal challenged a single judges order upholding the appointment of Bhaskar Ramamurthi as the director of Indian Institutes of Technology, Madras. In its interim order, a division bench, comprising Justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and M Dhandapani, said the secretary, higher education, HRD Ministry can go ahead with the process of selection of faculty to IITs following the roster and reservation policy. The same is subject to the result of the writ appeal. If there is any violation in the process of selection without adhering to the principles of reservation violating Article 14 and 16 of the Constitution, it would attract serious penal consequences, the bench said. The matter relates to the appointment of Dr Bhaskar Ramamurthi as the director of IIT Madras. Bengaluru was lashed by rain on Friday, leading to traffic snarls and flooding of low-lying areas in the state capital, a weather official said. The city received an average rainfall of 30mm as of 8.30 p.m., the India Meteorological Department (IMD) official told IANS here. The 40-minute downpour exposed the citys infrastructure woes, flooding several arterial roads and throwing peak-hour evening traffic out of gear and causing gridlocks. Trees were also uprooted due to rain. The pre-monsoon rains are due to low pressure in the Arabian Sea. Moderate spells of rain accompanied by heavy winds are likely to be witnessed over the next two days, IMD Bengaluru chief Sundar M. Metri said earlier. Centre tells Supreme Court: 3000 cases against 1765 lawmakers, UP and Kerala top list
The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that there are 3,816 criminal cases registered against 1765 MLAs and MPs across India and out of which 3045 cases are pending. The Centre, in its affidavit, included the figures and information received from 23 High Courts. The figures do not include the cases in Goa and Maharashtra. The state with most cases is Uttar Pradesh- 565 cases against 248 MPs and MLAs. It is closely followed by Kerala with 533 cases against 114 legislators. UP also tops the list of pending cases with 539, while Kerala is second with 373. After UP and Kerala, Tamil Nadu takes the third spot with 402 cases against 178 MPs and MLAs out of which 324 are pending. Notably, there are no cases against MLAs and MPs in Mizoram and Manipur. The affidavit was filed by Union Ministry of Law and Justice. It clarified that required details from the Bombay High Court had not been received. The affidavit comes in response to a direction to this effect by a two-judge bench chaired by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, asking for information on the number of cases against legislators. A group of women students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) today levelled allegations of sexual harassment and financial irregularities against a professor of the School of Life Sciences (SLS). 21-year-old Delhi University boy murdered by man who met him on dating app
A 21-year-old Delhi boy was allegedly murdered by a man who had reportedly met him on a dating app. The boy, identified as Ayush, was studying in the Delhi University and was missing since March 22. His dead body was found from a drain in national capitals Dwarka area on Thursday. Police revealed that Ayush was a regular user of various dating apps and met strangers through them frequently. The police have arrested one accused in connection with the case based on the technical surveillance and CCTV footage collected from various locations. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Sunday made health education and physical education mandatory for the students of Class 9 to 12. As per the new guidelines issued by the CBSE, the students have to attend the sports classes every day. The new guidelines also laid out that the schools affiliated with CBSE would have a daily sports period for all classes. According to PTI, the board has made both Health and Physical Education, qualifying subjects for which grades will be offered and is mandatory for students to be entitled to appear for the Class 10 and 12 board exams. According to the new notification, the students have to go to the playground during the Health and Physical Education period but will be free to perform any physical activity listed in the handbook and will be graded on the same. The rules also gave the freedom to schools to decide the kind of activities they would like to introduce during this period. PNB fraud case: ED seeks Interpol warrant against Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has moved the Interpol for issuance of a Red Corner Notice against diamond traders Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi in connection with the over Rs 12,000 crore PNB scam. Officials said the agency had sought issuance of the Interpol warrant against the two, based on court-issued non-bailable warrants obtained by it in a money laundering case. The agency is understood to have sent the request to the CBI for taking it up with the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France. A Red Corner Notice (RCN) is issued Once an RCN is issued, the Interpol (international police) seeks to arrest the person concerned in any part of the world and notifies that country to take his or her custody for further action at their end. Himachal Pradesh school bus accident: 27 children killed as vehicle plunges into gorge on Nurpur-Chamba highway
Twenty-seven children were among 30 killed when a school bus ferrying them back home plunged into a deep gorge near village Gurchal on the Nurpur-Chamba highway, about 100 km from the district headquarters at Dharamsala. The deceased children were students of Ram Singh Pathania Memorial School, police said. Thirty persons, including 27 children, have lost their life, Himachal Pradesh Transport Minister Govind Singh Thakur said. School bus driver, 67-year-old Madan Lal, and two women teachers also died in the accident, Kangra SP Santosh Patial said. Local BJP MLA, Rakesh Pathania, who was on the spot, said 27 bodies were recovered while two more had been spotted. At least 13 seriously injured persons were rushed to a hospital in Pathankot where one of them succumbed to injuries, an official said. SC Collegium defers decision on Justice K M Joseph’s elevation
The Supreme Court Collegium today deferred a decision on the issue of reconsidering its recommendation to elevate Uttarakhand Chief Justice K M Joseph as the judge of the apex court, after it was sent back by the government last week. Decide school safety guidelines in 3 months, Supreme Court tells Centre
The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to decide in three months on demands for framing of safety guidelines for all schools, as sought by the father of a seven-year-old boy who was killed in a Gurgaon school, and some lawyers. The top court said the decision taken by the government should cover both public and private schools. A bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and R F Nariman said the court was not an expert on framing of policy or guidelines for schools and it would be appropriate if the government looks into the cause raised in various writ petitions. We direct Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) to look into the prayers in the PILs and consider taking a decision in three months. The Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board has been asked by the Supreme Court to show documents signed by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to prove its claim that it owns the iconic Taj Mahal. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked the counsel of the board to show it documents to substantiate that Shah Jahan, who had built the Taj Mahal in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1631, had executed a waqfnama in favour of the board. Waqfnama is a deed or a document through which a person expresses intention to donate a property or land for charitable purposes or waqf. Who in India will believe that it (Taj) belongs to the waqf board, asked the bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, and added that such issues must not waste the time of the apex court. When the waqf board counsel told the court that Shah Jahan had himself declared it a Waqf property, the bench asked the board to show it the original deed executed by the Mughal emperor.
