In a horrifying incident in Kerala, a headless body of a woman was found in an isolated area near the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. The body is suspected to be of a 33-year-old Latvian woman, Liga Skromane, who went missing in March. Although the victim has been identified by her sister and friend, a detailed forensic examination would be done to scientifically confirm this. As per reports, the decomposed body of Skromane was hanging upside down from a tree, while the head of the body was found lying away from the rest of it, in a marshy spot. On Friday, fishermen found the body in a highly decomposed state and alerted the police. The next day, Skromane The police will conduct an autopsy, which will be followed by a DNA test that is likely to be done at the city-based Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology. In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court on Friday recognised living will made by terminally-ill patients for passive euthanasia. Upholding an individuals right to die with dignity, the five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra ruled that euthanasia and advance living will be permissible from now on. However, it also laid down guidelines on who can execute the will and how the approval for the same will be granted. The Maoist attack in Sukma in Chattisgarh resulted in the killing of 9 personnel of the 212 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Tuesday. Intelligence agencies had earlier issued multiple warnings and had alerted the security forces about the Maoist presence in the region, reported IE. Diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, co-accused in the Rs 13,540 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, has said that exaggerated allegations by multiple investigating agencies have left him completely defenceless and that he feared for his safety to return home. In a two-page March 16-dated letter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Choksi denied he was a partner of Diamond R US, Stellar Diamond and Solar Exports. These firms have been accused of conducting fraudulent transactions with Firestar International and Firestar Diamond International owned his nephew Nirav Modi, who is also an accused in the PNB fraud. After a gap of over two decades, Olive Ridley turtles made an appearance on Mumbais Versova beach on Thursday morning. As many as 80 hatchlings of the endangered species of turtle were spotted in the city. This is the first time in the last 20 years when Olive Ridley turtles have been spotted on the Versova beach. The hatchlings were spotted by a group of volunteers who were engaged in the clean-up of the Versova beach. Incidents relating to vandalisation of statues across the country appears far from over. In the latest in a string of such incidents, a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar was vandalised by unidentified miscreants in Uttar Pradeshs Sardaspur Village. A new statue has been installed in its place. Police have also registered a case. This comes just days after another statue of Dr BR Ambedkar was found vandalised in Greater Noida, a day before his 127th birth anniversary on April 14. At least 27 people have been reported dead due in a fire in Bihars Motihari. As per initial inputs, 27 people are still trapped in the bus. The Delhi High Court today closed the Rs 10 crore defamation suit filed by Union minister Arun Jaitley after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal apologised to him. Jaitley had filed this second defamation suit after Kejriwals former lawyer Ram Jethmalani allegedly abused him in open court during the proceedings of the original defamation suit against the Aam Aadmi Party chief and five other party functionaries. Justice Manmohan allowed the settlement application jointly filed by Jaitley and Kejriwal and disposed of the suit following the AAP chiefs apology, which was accepted by the BJP leader. The court accepted the written undertaking and statement of both the leaders and decreed the suit in accordance with the settlement application. During the hearing, advocate Anupam Srivastava, appearing for Kejriwal, told the court that the matter was settled and Jaitley accepted the apology tendered by the AAP leader. The famed dabbawalas of Mumbai and the city residents came out to help the thousands of farmers, who walked for six days to reach here from Nashik to raise their various demands, by providing them food and water. The farmers walked upto the Azad Maidan in South Mumbai early this morning as a part of their long march for raising demands, including implementation of the Maharashtra governments loan waiver scheme. Subhash Talekar, the spokesperson of Mumbai Dabbawala Association, said, We thought about helping the farmers with food as they are our food-providers and have come from remote parts of the state. We asked our men working between Dadar (in Central Mumbai) and Colaba (South Mumnbai) to collect food and deliver it to our farmer brothers at the Azad Maidan, he said. Dabbawalas, the tiffin-carriers known for their efficient delivery service, provided food to the protesters as a part of their roti-bank initiative. Delhi-bound Air India flight with 142 passengers diverts to Jaipur due to landing gear snag
A city-bound Air India flight from Jodhpur with 142 passengers on-board was diverted to Jaipur this evening due to a landing gear of the aircraft failing to retract after take off, officials said. Later, most of the passengers travelled to their destination by road while the remaining were adjusted on Alliance Air flight to Delhi from Jaipur, an Air India spokesperson said. The problem of the landing gear could not be fixed at Jaipur and the snag-hit aircraft was flown to Delhi without the passengers. The aircraft had 142 passengers on-board . Most of the passengers opted for travel by road transport while the rest of the passengers were later flown on subsidiary airline Alliance Air on its Jaipur-Delhi flight, He also said that the technical snag-ridden aircraft was brought to Delhi as a ferry flight for repairing.
Severe dust storm hits parts of Uttar Pradesh, leaves 45 dead, 38 injured
A high-intensity dust storm hit parts of Uttar Pradesh overnight, leaving 45 people dead and 38 injured, an official said today. Agra district was the worst hit, accounting for 36 deaths and injuries to 35 others. As per figures received till noon, 45 people were killed and 38 injured in the dust storm in different parts of the state, Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar told PTI here. Other districts affected were Bijnor, Bareli, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Firozabad, Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar, Rae Bareli and Unnao. Three persons died in Bijnor, two in Saharanpur and one each in Bareilly, Chitrakoot, Raebareli and Unnao districts, he said. Taking note of the havoc caused by the dust storm, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officers concerned to personally monitor relief operations and provide all necessary medical facilities to the affected. In the wake of the alleged SSC scam, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday tweeted a poetic jibe at PM Narendra Modi over the issue of rising unemployment in the country. Man enters HDFC Bank with fake bombs attached to belt around his waist in a bid to loot the bank; arrested
A man in Uttar Pradeshs Bijnor tried to loot an HDFC Banks Chandpur branch, however, he was caught by the staff and handed over to the police. The accused had attached fake bombs around his waist. The man claimed that he was facing financial difficulties and did not know what to do. As per police, the man seemed to mentally unstable and the probe is on. As per reports, the man reached the ATM at afternoon today. The chaos started soon after the man pulled his shirt revealing the fake bomb. He had tied an electronic device in his waist. Senior lawyer Indu Malhotras elevation to a Supreme Court judge has been cleared by the President. She will be sworn-in on Friday, making her the first woman to be elevated to the rank of a judge in the apex court directly from the Bar. Her name was unanimously recommended by the powerful Collegium headed by CJI Dipak Misra along with the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand KM Joseph on January 10 earlier this year. A day after getting the Minister of State status, two religious leaders today cancelled their proposed stir against an alleged scam in the Narmada conservation programme, while a third one said he would not avail the benefits as MoS. Seeking to downplay the controversy over grant of MoS status to five saints, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said his government wanted to rope in people from all walks of life for welfare and development. Elsewhere, Bhayyu Maharaj, one of the five religious leaders accorded MoS status, said he would not avail of the benefits associated with the MoS status. Ahead of the state assembly elections due later this year, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh had yesterday accorded the MoS status to five Hindu religious leaders – Narmadanand Maharaj, Hariharanand Maharaj, Computer Baba, Bhayyu Maharaj and Pandit Yogendra Mahant.
