The Maharashtra government plans to withdraw cases against the accused in the January 1 Bhima-Koregaon riots in Pune which had left one dead, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in the assembly on Tuesday. He also said that the state government will give compensation to the people who suffered losses during the rioting. Fadnavis informed the house that a committee will be set up to take a decision on the serious cases filed in the matter and submit its report within three months. He also said that the state will take over the management and maintenance of the samadhi of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Vadhu-Budruk village, around five kms from Bhima-Koregaon. Fadnavis said a total of 58 cases have been registered by the Pune police in connection with the riots that erupted on New Years Day and 162 accused were arrested. The riots had left one person dead and over a hundred injured including 60 policemen, he added. Referring to the losses, Fadnavis said these amounted to around Rs 13 crore, out of which Rs 9.40 crore were in Bhima-Koregaon riots itself. SC prohibits further constructions in unauthorised colonies in Delhi
The Supreme Court today prohibited any further construction not in confirmity with the building bye laws in 1,797 unauthorised colonies in Delhi and questioned the authorities intent in regularising such colonies having illegal constructions. The apex court, while observing that there cannot be any area in Delhi where there was no rule of law, directed the Centre to immedietly set up a special task force (STF) to oversee enforcement of laws regarding unauthorised constructions, and asked it to remove encroachments from public roads, public streets and the areas meant for pedestrians. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta, while refusing to vacate the stay at this stage on the proposed amendments in the Delhi Master Plan-2021, also sought details and figures on the status of groundwater level in the national capital since 2000 onwards. Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelanis son as well as the son of noted businessman Zahoor Ahmed Watali have been listed among the prosecution witnesses by the National Investigation Agency in a case related to terror funding in the Kashmir Valley. The NIA, which filed a charge sheet in the case in January this year, have named Watalis son Yasir Gaffar at serial number 30 and Geelanis son Naim-ul-Zaffar at serial number 37 in the list of prosecution witnesses submitted to a special court. The NIA has also submitted eight-page and four-page statements given by Ghaffar and Zaffar respectively to an NIA official during the course of investigation. A statement given before a police official is not admissible as a primary evidence in the court. The charge sheet has been filed by the NIA against 12 people, including Lashker-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen terror groups head Syed Salahuddin. Both of them are in Pakistan. PM Narendra Modi, Emmanuel Macron inaugurate UP’s biggest solar power plant
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday inaugurated Uttar Pradesh The 100 MW plant will be producing 75 MW of electricity for the time being. Built at a cost of around `650 crore by French firm Engie Solar, the plant has come up at Dadar Kalan village on the hilly Vindhyas mountains range. Around 1.18 lakh solar panels have been set up on over 380 acre and the plant will generate 15.6 crore units of electricity annually, which is about 1.30 crore units per month. Electricity from this plant would be transmitted to Mirzapurs Jigna sub-station of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation, officials said, adding that the plant has been completed in 18 months and can feed 1.5 lakh households every day. The International Solar Alliance is a treaty-based international inter-governmental alliance of 121 solar resource-rich countries lying fully or partially between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The aim of the alliance is to promote solar energy and reduce the use of fossil fuels in these countries. Centre seeks report from Mamata Banerjee government on violence during Ram Navami
The Centre has sought a report from the West Bengal government on incidents of arson and violence during Ram Navami processions in the last two days and offered assistance to deal with the situation, an official spokesperson said. In a communication, the Ministry of Home Affairs asked the West Bengal government to send a report about the incident, the steps being taken to restore normalcy and the action taken against those involved in the violence. The Centre also offered assistance of paramilitary forces in the light of reports of continuing violence and tension in some districts of the state, the MHA spokesperson said. At least two persons were killed and nearly a dozen others injured, some of them seriously, in intermittent violence involving Ramanavami processions at various places in West Bengal, including Purulia, Murshidabad, Bardhman West and Raniganj. The injured included several policemen with a senior police officer losing a hand after a bomb was hurled at him during a clash in Raniganj area. The state government has ordered heavy deployment of police force in violence-hit areas, besides lodging several cases of arson and rioting.

Two Chinese die on board a ship due to gas leakage near Gujarat port
Two Chinese nationals died while another one was seriously taken ill today apparently due to leakage of gas on board a cargo ship near Rozi Port in Gujarats Jamnagar, police said. The incident occurred on board a bulk carrier, Feng Hui Ha from Hong Kong, which was sailing to a Gujarat port from Singapore, a police official said. Prima facie, the two Chinese died due to gas leakage on the ship, said SP, Jamnagar, Pradip Sejul. He said three persons from the carrier passed out due to the gas leakage and were subsequently brought to the Jamnagar coast by their colleagues in a tug. The trio were then taken to Jamnagar civil hospital, where doctors declared two of them brought dead while the third person is undergoing treatment. We are investigating the incident. The ship is still in sea, he said. Another police official from Jamnagar civil hospital said the deceased are identified as Zhang Baohai (55) and Dong Kui (32), and the sick person as Sun Yingdong. All 13 candidates set to win unopposed in UP Legislative Council polls
All 13 candidates for as many vacant seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council are likely to get elected unopposed as no extra candidate entered the fray at the end of filing of nominations today, an official said. Unlike the recent Rajya Sabha polls in the state, which saw cross-voting, the UP Council polls will not witness any such scenario as there was virtually no possibility of polling scheduled for April 26. As many as 13 candidates have filed their nomination papers for 13 seats, returning officer Ashok Kumar Chaubey said. While 12 candidates their nomination papers today, one person had done so on April 12, he said. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be taken up tomorrow, and if all the documents are found valid, all the 13 candidates will be declared elected unopposed. However, an official declaration in this regard might not be done till the last date of withdrawal, which is April 19, officials said.
Karnataka minorities department notifies Lingayats & Veerashaiva lingayats as religious minorities
The Karnataka minorities welfare department has notified the Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats as religious minority, but said it would come into effect after the central governments approval to the state governments recommendation on the issue. In its notification, the Department of Minorities, Haj and Wakf, stated that it recognises Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats as minorities without affecting the rights and interests of other religious minorities of Karnataka, including reservations. The March 22 notification is seen as an attempt to put pressure on the Centre to approve the Karnataka cabinets contentious decision of according religious minority tag to Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats. China objects to India’s ‘transgression’ in Arunachal; India rejects protest
In yet another incident of discord, the Chinese military last month strongly protested against what it called the Indian Armys transgressions into the strategically sensitive Asaphila area along the disputed border in Arunachal Pradesh, but the Indian side roundly dismissed the complaint, official sources said. They said the Chinese side raised the issue at a Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) on March 15 here but the Indian Army rejected it, saying that the area in the upper Subansiri region of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to India and it has regularly been carrying out patrols there. Yamuna Expressway accident: Three AIIMS doctors, two of them women, died early today and four others of the same institute were injured in an accident on the Yamuna Expressway near here, police said. The seven doctors, posted as resident doctors in Emergency Medicine department of the AIIMS, were traveling to Agra from Delhi in an SUV to celebrate the birthday of Dr Harshad Wankhade, who was also killed in the accident. The SUV rammed into a canter around 2.30 AM, they said. While three doctors died on the spot, the four others were rushed to a private hospital here. They were then referred to the AIIMS trauma centre, SP (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said. TV comedian Kapil Sharma has sent a legal notice to a digital portal and a journalist working in it, seeking a public apology and Rs 100 crore in damages for allegedly publishing defamatory articles against him, his lawyer said. Sharma claims that Vicky Lalwani, working with 9X Media Pvt. Ltd, allegedly published false, malicious, fraudulent articles on the digital platform Spotboye. In view of the articles by Lalwani on Spotboye to willfully defame my client, we have sent them a legal notice to publicly apologise within seven days failing which we will institute civil and criminal proceedings against both, Sharmas advocate Tanveer Nizam said in a statement. A US-based analytics company facing allegations that it received personal data from the official mobile app of Prime Minister Narendra Modi without the consent of app users, has said that it does not sell, rent or re-market data. CleverTap employees dont have access to any of the data stored with it by a publisher, Anand Jain, co-founder of California-based firm, told PTI in a short e-mail statement when asked if his company has access to users personal information from the NaMo App. The five-year-old US-based startup founded by three Indians is facing the heat after a pseudonymous researcher alleged that Modis app was pumping private information like name, email, mobile number, device information and location, to servers controlled by the firm without the users consent. Information and Broadcasting Ministry withdraws guidelines on fake news
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry today withdrew its contentious press release on fake news after a directive from the Prime Ministers Office. PIB Press Release titled Guidelines for Accreditation of Journalists amended to regulate Fake News issued on 02 April 2018 stands withdrawn, the ministry said in a brief statement. Taking note of condemnation from various quarters, the PMO had ordered the ministry to withdraw the release, holding that the decision on what amounts to fake news should be left to press bodies. According to official sources, the PMO also felt that the government should not interfere in the matter. The ministry had yesterday announced measures to contain fake news saying the accreditation of a journalist could be permanently cancelled if the scribe is found generating or propagating fake news. The amended guidelines stated that if the publication or telecast of fake news was confirmed, accreditation of the journalist would be suspended for six months in the first violation and for one year in case of a second violation. Former Delhi HC Chief Justice Rajinder Sachar passes away
Former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajinder Singh Sachar passed away at a private hospital here today, a family friend said. Sachar, who was the chairperson of a committee set up by the previous UPA government to look into the social, economic and educational status of Muslims in India, was 94. He was admitted to Fortis Hospital in New Delhi earlier this week where he was undergoing treatment. He passed away at around 12 PM. He was undergoing treatment for ailments related to old age, the family friend said. Sachar, who was Chief Justice from August 6, 1985, to December 22, 1985, was associated with the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties, a rights group since his retirement.
