Hanuman Jayanti 2018: TMC takes out rallies; BJP, VHP stick to temple celebrations
Hanuman Jayanti was celebrated across West Bengal today amid tight security. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) took out colourful processions and organised Hanuman puja in various parts of the state. Senior party leaders and ministers were seen taking part in the celebrations. The BJP and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) kept their Hanuman Jayanti celebrations a low-key affair with small-scale programmes at temples and mutts. The saffron brigade had decided to keep the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations low-profile in view of widespread violence in various parts of the state over Ram Navami celebrations earlier this week. State VHP president Sachindranath Singha had yesterday said major Hanuman Jayanti rallies might lead to more problems in the state. Only last week, we had huge Ram Navami celebrations, which at some places also led to violence. Now, taking out rallies on Hanuman Jayanti will send a wrong message, he had said. The police have put in place elaborate arrangements across the state to avoid any untoward incident during the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. We will keep a tab on any suspicious movement. No one will be allowed to take out armed rallies, a senior police officer said.

Rajya Sabha polls: How Naresh Agarwal joining BJP is bad news for SP-BSP combine in Uttar Pradesh
Rajya Sabha polls 2018: First day of Naresh Agarwal, who dumped Samajwadi Party camp to join the BJP ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections on Monday, was jinxed by a controversy over his remarks against Samajwadi Party Upper House nominee Jaya Bachchan. On Tuesday, Agarwal regretted using the term woman who used to dance against Jaya but the controversy doesnt seem to end soon. Amid all the noise, what is interesting is the fact that Agarwal is set to upset the calculation of BSP-SP combine ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. As many as 10 Upper House members are to be elected from Uttar Pradesh. BJP is certain about winning eight seats, SP about one and BSP was expecting to win one seat with the support of remaining MLAs. The SP has 47 votes, which means at least 10 votes will remain available even after Jaya Bachchan gets elected comfortably. As many as 37 votes are necessary for winning a Rajya Sabha seat in UP. Out of the 10 SP votes, Agarwal will likely secure one vote of his son and MLA Nitin Agarwal for the BJP. He may try to get more SP votes for the…

IPFT to support NDA government in Tripura from outside if not given respectable ministries by BJP, says Debbarma
Mounting pressure on its electoral ally BJP, the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) today said that it would support the new government from outside if it was not given respectable positions in the ministry. Clarifying the meaning of respectable positions, IPFT president N C Debbarma said it meant proportionate representation of IPFT MLAs in the Cabinet and allocation of major departments to them. He said that the IPFT would also seek a separate block for its MLAs in the Assembly unless it was given respectable positions in the state Cabinet. The BJP and IPFT combine had swept to power in the state winning 43 out of the 59 seats for which elections were held. The BJP had won 35 and IPFT 8 seats. The election for the Charilam ST reserve constituency was countermanded due to the death of CPI-M candidate before the elections. There is an apprehension that we may not be given proper representation in the Cabinet and important portfolios would not be allocated to us as the BJP, the major constituent, alone secured 35 seats, Debbarma told PTI. He also said that the BJP and IPFT had fought the elections in alliance with the sole target of…

Supreme Court judge Justice J Chelameswar has said that if Justice Ranjan Gogoi is not made the next Chief Justice of India after Dipak Misra, it will only prove what we (he and three other judges of the apex court) said in the press conference was true. If it happens, it will only prove what we said in the press conference was true, Chelameswar said during a talk organised by the Harvard Club of India on the Role of judiciary in democracy. Chelameswar hoped the controversial January 12 press conference, where they made certain claims in reference with Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, would not come in way of elevation of Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who was also part of the virtual revolt, as the next CJI. In an unprecedented event, Chelameswar, the senior-most judge after the CJI, had on January 12 held a press conference along with justices Gogoi, MB Lokur and Kurian Joseph. They include steps such as repairing bad roads, particularly the stretches around major or busy traffic islands in the city, constructing foot over-bridges, and regulating unauthorised parking. Various junctions in the city face heavy traffic throughout the day, Kumbhakoni said. Therefore, it is the BMCs responsibility to ensure that roads around traffic islands are maintained well. The potholes or damage on these roads become a primary cause of traffic jams, he said. Kumbhakoni made the submissions before a bench of Justices Naresh Patil and G S Kulkarni. The bench was hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by the NGO Janhit Manch, seeking directions to the state and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to reduce the traffic woes of residents and strengthen the public transport network.
