Mahamitra app: Maharashtra Government withdraws it, claims purpose fulfilled
The Maharashtra government today withdrew its Mahamitra app from Google Play Store, with the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR) claiming that it was not necessary to continue the app as its purpose was fulfilled. On March 27, former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had alleged that the app was transferring data to a private trust called Anulom. He had said that Anulom was started by one Atul Waze with the blessings of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Questioning its withdrawal, Chavan today said, The controversial Mahamitra application (Version: 1.1.6) of the DGIPR has now been withdrawn from Google Play Store. After a completely vacuous and misleading statement made by Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Legislative Assembly on March 27, which tried to reply to charges levelled, the DGIPR has taken down the Mahamitra mobile application from its website in a hurry. Interestingly, if one now searches for the Mahamitra app on Google Play Store, the search shows up Anulom This clearly shows similarity between Mahamitra and Anulom apps, as I had pointed out in the Assembly, Chavan added. He said that the sudden withdrawal of the app raised several questions. Why was the application withdrawn suddenly?…

Born Naba Kumar Sarkar in Kamaarpukar village in West Bengals Hooghly district, Swami Aseemanand, as he came to be popularly known, stepped into the national spotlight in 2010 when he was arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in the blast in Hyderabads Mecca Masjid on May 18, 2007. Indian professionals hold rally to end green card backlog across US
Hundreds of Indian professionals held peaceful rallies across the US, demanding an end to the long and massive green card backlog by eliminating arbitrary per-country limit regulations. As a result, the current wait period for Indian skilled immigrants for green card can be as long as 70 years. The rallies, to urge lawmakers to support to end the per-country limit on legal permanent residency was held over the weekend in Arkansas, Kentucky and Oregon. As awareness builds on this topic among the American public and lawmakers, they are joining the chorus asking for reform to address the discriminatory green card backlogs impacting employment based green card applicants from India, said Seattle-based GCReforms, a recently created organisation by Indian-Americans for this purpose. The attendees spoke in one voice and the message was clear These limits were put in place when Lyndon Johnson was president of America and before even the first handheld calculator was invented GCreforms expects to…

Why Punjab shouldn’t be India’s rice bowl and Maharashtra must shun sugarcane
Punjab farmers, helped by near-total irrigation, stick to rice cultivation since it is profitable for them. Free power provided by the state government and an assured paddy procurement mechanism keep them going. This is when rice could have been grown with substantially lesser use of irrigation water in the eastern states of Bihar and West Bengal. Similarly, farmers in Maharashtra, despite the state The reason: Sugarcane is 100% irrigated in Maharashtra and the crop Both these paradoxes lay bare how misdirected government policies are aggravating India Even as large parts of the country witness acute water scarcity and depletion of water tables, agriculture consumes a disproportionate more than three-fourths of the country And 60% of irrigation water is used for rice and sugarcane, the two most water-guzzling crops. A recent working paper by Icrier discussed the issue in lucid detail and called for a paradigm shift in water use for agriculture, with the objective of shifting water-intensive crops to regions where the natural resource is abundant. The idea is to take policy action in order to make cultivation of rice and sugarcane more profitable to farmers in regions where the crops Tamil Nadu, for instance, may have high land productivity…
