An appellate body hearing the Max hospital twin baby death case today extended by a month the stay on a Delhi government order cancelling its licence in December, authorities said. The stay will be in effect till May 17, the next date of hearing, they said. Todays hearing was the third in the case by the Financial Commissioners court, Delhi. The licence cancellation case pertains to the birth of premature twins at the hospital in Shalimar Bagh on November 30 last year. Both the babies were declared stillborn by the hospital, one of them wrongly, and handed over to the family allegedly in a polythene bag. While the family was on its way to perform the final rites, they found that one of them (a baby boy) was still alive. The case triggered an outrage, prompting the AAP governments Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to cancel the hospitals licence on December 8 for alleged medical negligence. The upscale hospital group on December 13 had filed an appeal against the cancellation of the licence in the Financial Commissioners court, which stayed the order. The Max hospital side has raised certain objections to some of the questions raised by our side…

On two-year anniversary of dry state Bihar, Twitter lessons for Tejashwi Yadav, courtesy Nitish Kumar
In a veiled reference to Tejashwi Yadav, son of jailed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday told a gathering that there are some who just love to tweet but have no understanding. Kumar was apparently referring to the Leader of Oppositions tweets in which he never misses chance to criticise the state government. Without naming Tejashwi, Kumar said that they love to keep tweeting all through the day but have no understanding of any issue. This is not the first time when the CM has taken a swipe at Tejashwis understanding of the states issues. Recently, in the Vidhan Sabha, Kumar had referred him as a babu (kid) and advised him to try to understand the problem. Kumar also flayed Tejashwi for changing his stand on prohibition law. He said that after the prohibition law was introduced, he (Tejashwi) used to say votes have increased. Now he is criticising, the CM said while addressing a gathering in Patna to mark two years of the prohibition law. The CM further advised Tejashwi to help the police in arresting people who are involved in illegal trade of liquor and termed his criticism that only the poor…

Why BJP lost in Yogi Adityanath’s bastion, explains Akhilesh Yadav after Gorakhpur, Phulpur win
Elated over the victories in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav credited the outcome to BJPs misgovernance and also thanked once arch foe and BSP leader Mayawati for supporting his candidates. I am thankful to the people of these two places, he told the media. Jo sarkaar janta ko dukh deti hai, janta usko sahi jawaab deti hai, he said. Acche din toh aaye nahi, janta ek ho gayi aur BJP ke bure din laane ka kaam kiya. (A government which gives pain to the people gets a fitting response from the people. Good days never dawned for the people and so bad days have started for the BJP.) The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister extended his gratitude to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati for her support to his candidates. The scare over rotten meat supply from dump yards has led to an increase in the demand for fish among people here. Across the city, meat traders are experiencing a slump in their businesses over the past few days, but the sale of fish has increased by at least 30 to 40 per cent, Soumyajit Das, managing director of State Fisheries Development Corporation Limited, told PTI. INX Media case: Arguments deferred on anticipatory bail plea of Karti Chidambaram’s CA
A Delhi court today deferred the arguments on a plea of Karti Chidambarams CA S Bhaskararaman seeking anticipatory bail fearing arrest by the CBI in the INX Media case, after the probe agency sought time to file a reply. Special Judge Sunil Rana, who has already granted him bail in the ED case, posted the matter for hearing on March 26. The counsel for Bhaskararaman had moved an anticipatory bail application on March 12 before the court apprehending that after the ED, the CBI would seek his custody for interrogation. The special court had on March 13 granted bail to Bhaskararaman in the INX Media money laundering saying there were no specific allegation against him except that he aided former Union minister P Chidambarams son in committing the crime. The CA was sent to jail on February 26 after his custodial interrogation by the ED. Kartis name had cropped up in the case relating to the Foreign Investment Promotion Boards (FIPB) approval granted in 2007 for receipt of funds by INX Media when his father and Congress leader P Chidambaram was the finance minister during the previous UPA regime. The ED had alleged that INX Media had deliberately and in…
RSS outreach to Muslims : Monthly pension for divorced women, free books for orphans
Having apparently succeeded in making some inroads into the Muslim community, specially among women, by aggressively campaigning against triple talaaq, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) has begun a second and subtle round of wooing the minorities. The move assumes significance in the run-up to the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha polls, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be seeking a second term. While the RSS – the BJPs ideological parent – vehemently denies that it is doing anything of this sort, its affiliate organisations like the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) have undertaken an aggressive plan to romance the minorities, particularly women. And for this, they have started first-of-its-kind initiatives like monthly pensions for divorced Muslim women, and freebies like books and uniforms for orphans in many parts of the country. In Uttar Pradesh alone, which accounts for 80 of the Lok Sabhas 543 elected seats, the MRM has adopted some 700 families under its unique pension scheme that is being run in Varanasi, Gorakhpur and the Bundelkhand region. Muslims comprise about 20 percent of Uttar Pradeshs 220 million population. Denying any RSS role in these pro-minority moves, Indresh Kumar, the guide of the MRM, says…
UP, Bihar bypoll results show united opposition can defeat BJP: NCP
Describing the BJPs defeat in the bypolls to three Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as a shape of things to come, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today said the results had shown a united opposition could defeat the saffron party-led regime in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The bypoll results are a victory of the united forces for social justice. There was no division of votes and thus, the BJP could not benefit from such a split, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik told PTI here. In the 2019 general election, when the secular votes will not get divided, the BJP will be defeated. What happened yesterday will impact the general election, the former Maharashtra minister said, adding that the results had proved that a united opposition could defeat the BJP-led central government. It is the mandate of the people that the like-minded parties must unite. We are hopeful that the UPA will consolidate all the secular and like-minded parties, he said. On the leaders of 20 opposition parties attending a dinner hosted by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her attempts to rally forces against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Malik said, The dinner was hosted to discuss…
Rats in Mantralaya: BJP says Eknath Khadse got the number wrong
A day after senior BJP leader Eknath Khadse hinted at a scam in the contract to kill over three lakh rats in Mantralaya, a spokesperson of his own party today said the figure was wrong. But no one, it seems, knows how many rats had made the state headquarters their home. The 3,19,400 rats that Khadse spoke of was actually the number of poison tablets used by the private contractor to kill the rodents, said BJP MLA and spokesperson Ram Kadam. Khadse, a former revenue minister, made a startling claim yesterday that a survey found that there were 3,19,400 rats in Mantralaya, the state governments headquarters. A private company hired to get rid of rodents claimed to have killed all of them in a mere seven days, the veteran BJP leader said in the Assembly, asking how was this possible. Documents obtained under the Right to Information show that the contract has been signed at the rate of Rs 1.50 for killing one rat, Kadam told reporters. The Public Works Department has clarified that 3,19,400 was not the number of rats found in Mantralaya, but the number of poison tablets used, he said. However, the BJP spokesperson could not reply…
Naroda Patiya riots: Gujarat HC says SIT probe had shortfalls
Coming down heavily on the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot cases, the Gujarat High Court said there were several shortfalls in its probe. A division bench of Justices Harsha Devani and A S Supehia also said the investigation carried out by the SIT, which was constituted on the directions of the Supreme Court in 2008, did not inspire much confidence. The high court had yesterday acquitted former BJP minister Maya Kodnani, along with 17 others, and upheld the conviction of 13 people, including ex-Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi. It also convicted three others who were acquitted by the trial court. It is during the course of investigation by the SIT that the name of .Mayaben Kodnani was revealed. From the evidence of the witnesses who have named Mayaben Kodnani, it emerges that many of them have referred to her having come in a white Maruti car. However, no efforts have been made to ascertain as to whether the said accused owned any white Maruti car at the relevant time, the court said. No investigation has been conducted to establish whether (Kodnani) used to travel in a white Maruti car, nor has any exercise been…

On Saturday, Mayawati dismissed there was any trouble in the newly forged-partnership with Akhilesh Yadavs SP. The BSP chief said she will not let BJPs design tamper the newly-formed relationship. But the condition was that the SP should ensure the election of BSP candidate to Rajya Sabha. The agreement has not worked and Mayawati, despite claimed there was no trouble in SP-BSP pact, reminded Akhilesh that in his positions, she would have ensured the victory of her ally first. Each candidate needs at least 33 votes to get elected to the UP Legislative Council. BJP-led NDA, which has 324 MLAs, and can easily win…
